North Wiltshire SCITT offers practical Initial Teacher Training in Wiltshire, Swindon and the surrounding areas. We offer one-academic year, full time teacher training courses in both Primary (5-11 years) and Secondary Teacher Training.
We believe the best place to train teachers effectively in the highly complex art of teaching is in schools. The close links within our partnership schools provide trainees with a broad spectrum of experiences. Trainees meet centrally for professional and subject training sessions. This enables them to share good practice and discuss their experiences in their different schools.
Upon successful completion of the course, North Wiltshire SCITT will recommend you for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and you will gain a Level 7 Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s credits accredited by Bath Spa University.
North Wiltshire SCITT is part of the Ascend Learning Trust (formerly Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust/RWBAT) which was set up as a Multi Academy Trust in May 2017. The Trust exists to ensure that the staff, pupils and parents from each Academy are able to benefit from Excellence in Education.
We are proud to have worked with Bath Spa University since 2014 who are the providers and accreditors for the PGCE.
We are also the proud accreditors for the Primary School Direct programmes run by Pickwick Learning (Primary 5-11 years ITT programme) and The Blue Kite Academy Trust (3-7 years & 5-11 years ITT programmes.)
We work closely with both programmes to ensure that their trainees benefit from our values and standards.
North Wiltshire SCITT has relationships with over 40 primary and secondary schools within Wiltshire, Swindon and the surrounding areas, including those within the Ascend Learning Trust.
You training year will comprise of at least 120 days working in two of these partnership schools.
You will be assigned a “host” placement school with a dedicated school mentor. This placement will start on the first day of the Autumn term in September. Later in the year, you will also be assigned a shorter contrasting “complementary” placement.
You will also experience time in a specialist provision school and an alternative phase school, where primary trainees will spend a day in a secondary school and secondary trainees in a primary school.
In addition to in-school teaching experience, you will also benefit from face-to-face central training and subject specific training sessions, held either at NWSCITT’s training centre in Royal Wootton Bassett or one of our local partnerships schools.
NWSCITT Trainees will be registered as students with Bath Spa University and will have access to their online Library and their VLE site (Minerva).
PGCE assignment launches and tutorials will be held at North Wiltshire SCITT in Royal Wootton Bassett, virtually or at one of our local partnership schools. You will not have to travel to Bath Spa University, unless you wish to. All resources will be available to you online.
Children come from diverse backgrounds and we are committed to providing teachers who act as role models and are representative of the diversity within society. All potential applicants are considered on an equal basis.
Should you have a disability of any kind, we will ensure that all candidates applying and securing a place to train with us will be provided, wherever possible, with the means to do so. Reasonable adjustments can be made, such as:
Ensuring access to training venues and schools – Providing additional time where required e.g. for PGCE assignments – Providing larger print and/or coloured paper – Additional support from School-based mentor/ Subject Lead Tutors/Teaching and Learning tutors/Central SCITT staff if required – Ensuring that candidates with hearing and/or sight impairments are seated appropriately to facilitate access to presentation content and instructions – Supporting scribes if required, and ensuring that closed captions are available during virtual sessions.
