Design & Technology (38QN)

Unfortunately, our DT programme is now closed for our 2023-2024 course. 

Design and Technology (DT) is a diverse curriculum area which includes the study of subjects including Product Design, Engineering, Food, Graphics and Textiles.  

Trainees will be expected to teach the fundamentals of Design and Technology, looking at subject areas such as design principles;  the use of new technologies, systems for designing (such as CAD), and the social, economic and environmental challenges associated Design & Technology;  plus the technical specifications and uses of different types of materials alongside the wide range of ever evolving manufacturing techniques.  In addition, trainees should be aware of all Health & Safety requirements related to each D&T subjects.

We are looking for:

  • Inspirational trainees, with a passion for Design & Technology, who are committed to education.
  • A relevant degree, of which at least 50% must be related to Design and Technology.
  • A n A-Level in DT is preferred but not essential.
  • Trainees must be able to demonstrate relevant DT experience, either as a hobby, or through work experience, employment or volunteering in one or more of the following areas:
      • Product Design including, furniture, jewellery, carpentry, electronics etc.
      • Engineering/construction/mechanical/aviation industry.
      • Architecture/theatre design.
      • Graphic/Visual Design.
      • Food/Catering/Nutrition.
      • Fashion/costume design.
      • STEM.
  • Flexibility, initiative, resilience.
  • Confident communicators.
  • Time management skills.
  • The ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
  • A team player.
  • Trainees who are prepared to work hard and be organised.

School Experience:
Whilst not a requirement of the course, it is beneficial to gain some school experience (either as observational days, Teaching Assistant roles, volunteering etc.) to understand the role of a DT teacher in the classroom
