Primary (General) 5-11 Years
What we offer: North Wiltshire SCITT offers a provider-led, fee funded Primary (5-11 years) School based programme, which leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE Level 7 qualification with 60 Masters Credits. You will have the opportunity to experience both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 teaching, within two different primary schools. We also aim to give you experience of at least one day in a secondary school to help understand the importance of transition between the two phases, plus time in a specialist provision school to help understand the challenges and rewards that can be associated with children with additional needs (Covid restrictions permitting).
Your Support: Each trainee will be assigned a mentor within their placement school, who is normally the class teacher. There will also be an additional member of staff who will be responsible for all trainees and Early Career Teachers within their school. In addition to this school support, NWSCITT Primary trainees will also have the support from their NWSCITT Teaching and Learning Tutor, plus the NWSCITT Administration and Management staff.
Your Training: Whilst most of your training will take place 'on the job' within your placement school, during your course, you will also take part in a central and subject specific training programme. During the first term, this will be a on Thursday and Friday, reducing to a Friday only as the course progresses. By February, you will be working in school 5 days a week, gradually increasing your timetable.
Our central training programme covers areas including, but not limited to: safeguarding, equality and diversity, Maths, English, Science, Phonics, Spelling, Handwriting, SEND, Behaviour Management, Assessment, English as an Additional Language, Differentiation and Professional Behaviour.
What we are looking for: In addition to meeting the Primary phase qualification eligibility requirements, we are looking to applicants who are suited to the teaching profession both academically and personally. You need to be flexible, adaptable and resilient, highly motivated and have the utmost professionalism at all times. You need to be able to demonstrate your enthusiasm for working with children and young people, being able to build good relationships with them and your colleagues, treating everyone with respect and dignity. We actively welcome applications from mature students, valuding their experience of life and the world of work, as well as applicant straight from their first degree. We enourage trainees from a variety of backgrounds and can offer support, as far as reasonably practicable, to those trainees with additional needs.
Do I need school experience? School experience isn't essential, however, we do recommend that you gain an understanding of what it is like to be a teacher and their role within the classroom. Previous trainees have advised that gaining this has helped them with their transition to becoming a teacher. This experience can be gained by volunteering within a school, working as a Teaching Assistant, arranging for school experience days etc. A consideration of the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 would also be appropriate.
