Primary Programme

Primary General (5-11 Years)
(2LLT)
North Wiltshire SCITT offers a provider-led, fee funded Primary (5-11 years) School based programme, which leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE Level 7 qualification with 60 Masters Credits. You will have the opportunity to experience both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 teaching, within two different primary schools. You will also experience time in a secondary school to help understand the importance of transition between the two phases, and time in a specialist provision school to help understand the challenges and rewards that can be associated with children with additional needs.
Whilst most of your training will take place ‘on the job’ within your placement school, during your course, you will also take part in a central and subject specific training programme. For the most part, during the first term, this will be a on Thursday and Friday, reducing to Friday only as the course progresses. By February, you will be working in school 5 days a week.
Our central training programme covers areas including, but not limited to:
- Safeguarding
- Being an inclusive teacher
- Maths
- English and phonics
- Science
- Spelling
- Handwriting
- SEND
- Behaviour Management
- Assessment
- English as an Additional Language
- Differentiation
- Professional Behaviour.
In addition to this, you will also have dedicated PGCE lectures and tutorials delivered by Bath Spa University tutors. These will take place either at the NWSCITT training facility, one of our partnership schools or virtually.
In addition to meeting the Primary phase qualification eligibility requirements we are looking to applicants who are suited to the teaching profession both academically and personally, regardless of background.
You need to be flexible, adaptable and resilient, highly motivated and have the utmost professionalism at all times. You need to be able to demonstrate your enthusiasm for working with children and young people, being able to build good relationships with them and your colleagues, treating everyone with respect and dignity.
School experience isn’t essential, but we do recommend that you gain an understanding of what it is like to be a teacher and their role within the classroom. Previous trainees have advised us that gaining this has help them with their transition to becoming a teacher. This experience can be gained by volunteering within a school, working as a TA, observational/experience days etc. A consideration of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 would also be appropriate.
Each trainee will be assigned a mentor within their placement school, who is normally the class teacher. There will also be an additional member of staff (ITT Lead) who will be responsible for all trainees within their school. In addition to this school support, NWSCITT Primary trainees will also have the support from the NWSCITT Teaching and Learning Tutor plus the NWSCITT Administration and Management staff.
